The COVID-19 virus is a huge risk to all, and even more for ethnic minorities. Tribals comprise a substantial minority population of India, making up 8.6% of India‘s population, or 104.2 million people, according to the 2011 census.

One of the most impactful activities to combat infections is soap and hygiene practices. But soap is not available to all. Often there is not even the money to buy soap…

The situation in our project areas

Also in the areas where we are active under the umbrella of Making More Health the access to the villages where tribal people live is reduced – due to the actual situation.

At the tribal hospital the first cases are registered, but there is hope that the virus will not spread too much. A lot of online consultation, information and hygiene measurements are taking place.

In our tribal village communities in the Anaikatti area we have run a lot of health and hygiene trainings in the past years. And taught some women who are organized in self-help groups about soap production. This pays off. The tribal people can protect themselves much better and produce their own soaps.

Recently, at the KKID campus together with tribal women and NGO people a dedicated soap making day has taken place. These soaps will be distributed in the tribal villages.
